MSEN 720 Statistical Thermodynamics
This course covers the basics of statistical Thermodynamics. The course will focus on the connection between macroscopic thermodynamics properties and the microscopic molecular details of thermodynamic systems at equilibrium through the introduction of partition functions. The course will introduce the Maxwell-Boltzmann formulation of statistical Thermodynamics with application to ideal gases and solids. Furthermore, the course will introduce the Gibbs approach (Ensemble Method) with application to real gases. Introduction to Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics with applications to molecular transport quantities and Kinetic theory of gases will be presented at the last two weeks of the course.
