College of Engineering and Physical Sciences

One of the main pillars of Abu Dhabi’s social, political, and economic future is a sustainable knowledge-based economy, as outlined in the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. The overarching purpose of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Khalifa University of Science and Technology is to work towards this vision by advancing the discovery of new knowledge, its dissemination, and exploitation.

The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is distinguishing itself as a major contributor to economic diversification in Abu Dhabi and the region, particularly through its close alignment with growing regional industries in key themes such as energy, aerospace, healthcare, transportation, and information and communication technologies.

The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is a vibrant community of academic scholars, students, and staff dedicated to engineering education and innovation for the ultimate benefit of society. The College empowers students with a great sense of purposeful academic curiosity about the physical world and an appreciation of the social and environmental context within a rapidly changing world.

 

College Mission

The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences serves the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the nation, and the world by providing students with holistic education underpinned by the principle of engineering with a purpose, thus empowering them to be outstanding leaders in discovering new knowledge as a catalyst for business innovation, particularly towards the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.

The College also plays an integral role in this vision by conducting cutting-edge fundamental, multidisciplinary, and translational research in key strategic areas such as information and communication technology, aerospace, transport and logistics, healthcare, energy, and the environment.

College Postgraduate Degree Programs

The postgraduate degree programs offered by the  College of Engineering and Physical Sciences are in two categories: Master of Science (M.Sc.)/ Master of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

The Master of Science/ Master of Engineering programs are:

  • Master of Engineering in Health, Safety and Environment Engineering
  • Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering
  • Master of Science in Applied Chemistry
  • Master of Science in Chemical Engineering
  • Master of Science in Civil and Infrastructural Engineering
  • Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Master of Science in Engineering Systems and Management
  • Master of Science in Health Systems Management
  • Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering
  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering
  • Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering
  • All M.Sc. programs consist of a minimum of 30 credit hours. The required program credits are typically distributed as follows: 12 credits of Program Core courses, 9 credits of Program Elective courses, and 9 credits of Master’s Thesis work.

The credit distribution for the following program differs from the standard M.Sc. structure:

  • Health, Safety and Environment Engineering: 12 credits of Program Core courses, 12 credits of Program Elective courses, and 6 credits of project work.

 

The Doctor of Philosophy programs are:

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Sciences
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Systems and Management
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science and Engineering
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering

The regular PhD program required credits are distributed as follows:  24 credits coursework, and 36 credits of PhD Research Dissertation work. The direct PhD program required credits are distributed as follows: 36 credits of coursework, and 36 credits of PhD Research Dissertation work.

Internship

Internships provide an important opportunity for Khalifa University graduate students to experience a unique facility or specialization offered by an academic institution, research center or company. Internship experiences can enhance the research students undertake at Khalifa University and facilitate real world applications. Students gain professional experience by interacting with potential research partners and employers, as well as an understanding of the skills needed in different industry sectors. Internship students will promote Khalifa University as a world class institution among government and industry entities in the UAE and around the world. Students who demonstrate promising potential for independent work and whose research topic lends itself to external collaboration may be considered for an internship.

All registered graduate students can apply for an internship during their studies at Khalifa University. Internships are optional and subject to approval.
