PEEG 742 Hydrogen Energy Resources, Storage, and Utilization

This course focuses primarily on the hydrogen energy upstream and the concept of hydrogen energy being the future global energy resort ousting the traditional fossil fuel energy. Hydrogen resources color code classification matrix introduced along with the concept of the hydrogen fuel cell remaining constraints. Challenges facing the implementation of H2 energy including resourcing, transportation, and storage are discussed. Hydrogen separation from hydrocarbon gases (ex: methane) and other hydrocarbons (ex: oil, coal, bitumen) are thoroughly deliberated. H2 subsurface storage in special geological formations similar to oil and gas sealed traps, as well as abandoned oil and gas reservoirs are among the very important subjects discussed in this course. Mechanisms used in modeling hydrogen subsurface storage and recovery are comprehensively discussed.
