CHEG 702 Energy Nano Transport Phenomena
The departure of classical laws of physics occurs at the micro/nano scale. At confined nanometer dimensions, the classical phenomenological laws, such as Fourier’s law for heat conduction, Newton’s law of cooling for convection, Stefan-Boltzmann law for thermal radiation amongst others, depart and are unable to accurately describe energy transport. In this course we will first derive Ohm’s law of electrical current and Fourier’s law of heat conduction from Boltzmann’s equation. Then we will depart from these classical laws and introduce photon, electron and phonon laws to capture the nanoscale effects. This will include quantum size effects, fast transport phenomena and electron, photon and phonon density of states.
