PUBH 703 Epidemiology

This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the principles and methodologies of epidemiology, which is a vital field of study that explores the distribution, determinants, and consequences of health and disease in populations. Epidemiology plays a crucial role in identifying risk factors for diseases, assessing the effectiveness of interventions, and providing evidence-based recommendations for disease prevention and control. As such, the course provides students with an understanding of the conceptual development of epidemiology and its increasingly prominent role in public health and medical research. The course covers various topics, including basic concepts of epidemiology, introduction to study design, measures of occurrence and association, and validity, and also delves into the latest developments and debates in epidemiological practice, including topics such as confounding, and causal inference and reasoning. By the end of this course, students will be equipped with the necessary skills to analyze and interpret epidemiological data, and apply epidemiological principles and techniques to inform public health policy and practice. By gaining a deeper understanding of epidemiological concepts and methods, students will be better equipped to tackle the complex health challenges that face our society today, laying the groundwork for more advanced studies in epidemiological research.
