Program Structure and Requirements

Overall Program Structure

To obtain an MPH degree in Public Health, students are required to successfully complete 30 credit hours (Table 1). Elective course selection should be made in consultation with the student’s advisor.

Program Requirements

Students seeking the degree of MSc in Public Health must successfully complete 30 credit hours as specified in the program requirements detailed below, with a minimum CGPA of 3.0. Course selection should be made in consultation with the student’s Main Advisor.

Master’s Thesis (minimum 6 credit hours)

The outcome of research should demonstrate the synthesis of information into knowledge in a form that may be used by others. The research findings must be documented in a formal thesis and defended successfully in a viva voce examination with the expectation that the research will ultimately lead to publishable quality scholarly articles. Students must complete a Thesis (PUBH 699) that involves creative, research-oriented work within the field of public health under the direct supervision of the student’s Main Advisor and Student Advisory Committee (SAC). The outcome of the Thesis Research should:

  • Demonstrate a high level of understanding and specialization in his/her field of study;
  • Show evidence that he/she is able to conduct investigation with rigor and discrimination;
  • Demonstrate the ability to acquire and collate information through the effective use of appropriate sources and equipment;
  • Demonstrate an ability to recognize and validate research problems;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of relevant research methodologies and techniques and their appropriate application to his/her research;
  • Have made a significant and original contribution to the body of knowledge in his/her field of study;
  • Constructively defend and critically appraise his/her research outcomes;
  • Show awareness of relevant research issues, including environmental, political, economic, social, copyright, ethical, health and safety, exploitation of results, and intellectual property rights
